Swenson | Anderson | Rolando |
Previous job: Product Manager at an aerospace performance materials firm.
Current job: Director of Global Marketing Communications, GE Intelligent Platforms, General Electric.
The Difference: The market adoption curves in technology industries are very different than those in other industries. MOT teaches you how to ride and predict those curves.
Jay's Story: When Swenson moved from design engineer to management, MOT provided the foundation for the switch. "I don't believe I would have my current job had I not pursued the MOT program."
What Jay Said: "I have daily opportunities to use the marketing, product planning, finance, and technology forecasting knowledge I learned through MOT."
"MOT has given me both the vocabulary and business foundation to perform as an effective manager and strategist"
Current job: Vice President, Wholesale Technology Services, Wells Fargo NA
The Difference: Anderson credits what she learned in the MOT program as a valuable part of her career advancement. "I think my job performance improved, and it gave me a much wider perspective and knowledge base."
Patty's Story: Anderson managed logistics engineers as product development team leader while she pursued her MOT degree. Now as vice president of trust operations, she manages the mutual funds operations department; the conversions, mergers, and acquisitions department; and the training and support department.
What Patty Said: "I thoroughly enjoyed the MOT program. The instructors were varied from academia to industry, which added a more realistic viewpoint for us."
"The instructors also encouraged a lot of interaction; the classroom interactions and the experiences of my classmates added tremendous value to the learning experience."
"In my job, I use the strategies we learned in the MOT program for leading and managing, recognizing the different types of people in an organization and how valuable all the different types of personalities and styles are."
Previous job: Laboratory Manager, Tape Process Technology Center, 3M
Current job: Technical Director, Tape Process Technology Center, 3M
The Difference: The MOT Program offered Rolando the business tools that he wanted. "MOT allowed me to become aware of a full spectrum of leadership tools. I was able to get exposure to many tools in a two-year period where 'on-the-job' training in the same areas may take five to 10 years."
What Rick Said: "The MOT program made me more aware of the business aspects of my company. As an engineer my expertise was mostly technical, and the MOT gave me business tools to compliment my technical abilities."
"Where 'on-the-job' training in the same areas may take five to 10 years, the MOT program provided me with a full spectrum of leadership tools in a two-year period."

The Master of Science in Management of Technology (MOT) was launched at the University of Minnesota and the Institute of Technology’s Technological Leadership Institute (formerly the Center for the Development of Technological Leadership) in 1990. It is one of the oldest, and experts in the field of management of technology consider it one of the foremost, MOT programs in the world. Over 500 students have participated in the MOT program from over 200 sponsoring companies. The MOT program develops the leadership and management knowledge of technology-based professionals. It is similar to an MBA with some important differences: MOT students study finance and accounting but they also study technology foresight and forecasting, innovation management, and new technology product development and commercialization. Another important curricular difference is the MOT Capstone Project class, which is a work-based project. MOT students have five or more years of science, engineering or other technology-intensive work experience. While they work full time, students attend the program as a cohort and complete their studies in two fall and two spring semesters. To find out more – request a fall 2010 application, RSVP for an upcoming informational session, or listen to Prof. Amin's presentation about the MOT Capstone Project class – please go to the MOT Prospective Students link.
